harmonized system code (HS Code) definition
What is the HS code?
The Harmonized System (HS code) is an international coding system to classify the product. It allows countries to classify goods prepared for exporting and importing based on customs purposes which facilitate the trade flow.

Saudi Tariff Codes (HS codes)

The international HS Code is six digits, and the Unified Gulf Cooperation Council’s HS code is eight digits. The Saudi Customs created a new HS code integrating both the international system, and Gulf system, making it a twelve digits HS Code, as the first six digits match the World Customs Organization’s HS Code.

The Importance
of the HS Code Definition
Registering products on Saber electronic platform is done through the HS code.
The HS code of a product determines which technical regulations are applied to the product, and which requirements need to be met.
HS Code definition helps to avoid any confusion during the customs clearance, or the process of certificate of conformity issuance.
Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization (SASO) continuously assesses the HS codes enlisted on Saber, so HS Codes must be frequently verified to identify the right code for your products.
Remarkable Information
About the International HS Code
-
The World Customs Organization (WCO) manages the Harmonized System HS. It updates the codes every five years.
-
The HS dedicates specific six-digit codes to classify commodities. All countries are allowed to add more digits to make codes longer but must commit to the standard six digits.
-
As per the international classification, the HS consists of approximately 5,300 articles/product descriptions (headings and subheadings), arranged in 99 chapters, grouped in 21 sections.
-
The six digits of the HS Code are divided into three parts: The first two digits (HS-2) identify the chapter the goods classification, e.g. 09 = Coffee, Tea, Maté and Spices. The next two digits (HS-4) identify the group within that chapter, e.g. 09.02 = Tea, whether or not flavoured. The next two digits (HS-6) are more specific, e.g. 09.02.10 Green tea (not fermented).
